The Food Connects team is excited to share some exciting news with our community: after a thoughtful and collaborative review process, the Food Connects Board of Directors has unanimously chosen Lee Halpern as our next Executive Director!
Lee has been an important part of the Food Connects team for the past three years, most recently serving as our Interim Executive Director since March 2025. He now steps into the permanent role, following in the footsteps of our founder, Richard Berkfield, who led the organization for over a decade before stepping down earlier this year.
Our decision to appoint Lee wasn’t made lightly. The Board sought input from staff, partners, and stakeholders, through surveys, open office hours, one-on-one conversations, and team meetings to ensure this decision reflected the voices of the Food Connects community.
“Lee has demonstrated unwavering dedication to the mission and work of Food Connects over the last three years,” says Stephanie Bonin, President of the Board of Directors. “He has shown strong leadership during a time of transition, and we believe he has both the vision and the adaptability to guide Food Connects into the future.”
Lee first joined Food Connects as a Business Manager, bringing with him a wealth of experience in guiding and stabilizing organizations through rapid growth. In 2024, he stepped into the role of Deputy Director, positioning him perfectly to lead during our recent transition. As Interim Executive Director, Lee provided stability, focus, and forward momentum while the organization continued to strengthen its role in the local food economy.
“I am honored and excited to step into the role of Executive Director for an organization I am deeply committed to,” says Lee. “Food Connects is powered by an extraordinary team, dedicated partners, and a community that values the importance of strong regionalfood systems. I look forward to building on our successes and working together to meet the evolving needs of our region.”
When Lee was appointed Interim Executive Director earlier this year, Richard Berkfield, now serving as Executive Director of the Vermont Wilderness School, shared his belief in Lee’s leadership:
“Lee understands the heart and soul of Food Connects. His leadership, paired with his commitment to the mission, will ensure the organization continues to thrive and make a lasting impact.”
We couldn’t agree more.
As we look ahead, we’re excited to see how Lee’s vision, experience, and deep care for our mission will continue to strengthen food systems across New England. Please join us in welcoming Lee to his new role!
